FOIA appeal filed by Downtown Publications

Downtown Publications is appealing the denial of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request made to Bloomfield Township on September 14, 2014, requesting information relative to the pension obligation bond issue investments, including a copy of a Miller Canfield review of the investments done this past spring or summer, and any and all reports generated by firms subcontracted by the law firm, which the township's legal counsel in October denied as exempt under "attorney client privilege."

Mich. court orders city to comply with FOIA

From Michigan Capitol Confidential: The city of Westland “subverted” Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act and must comply with the law, according to a recent judge’s ruling.

“They [Westland officials] were over charging,” said William Maze, the Livonia attorney who sued the city. “Clearly they were doing it to make a profit.”

Bills to limit access to juvenile records, accident reports move forward

From Detroit Free Press: LANSING — Two bills that would make it more difficult or impossible for the public to access the criminal records of juveniles and accident records from police passed overwhelmingly in the Legislature on Wednesday.

The first bill, passed unanimously in the Senate, would shut out the public from access to the criminal records of juveniles available on a Michigan State Police-run online data base. The records could be released to other law enforcement agencies and employers who do criminal background checks on potential employees

Mich. AG part of forum on ‘clean and open government’ in Detroit

Mackinac Center files FOIA suit against City of Westland, Mich.

From Mackinac Center:  In June of this year, Capitol Confidential sent Freedom of Information Act requests to every municipality in the state which operates a golf course seeking financial information. Westland responded that the city requires a $5 fee up front before they will provide any information.

Westland also charged $1 per page for copying costs and $45.61 per hour for the person gathering the information.
