AP e-book ‘Divided America’ to benefit NFOIC

The "Divided America" series began in June. The e-book also includes personal reflections from AP journalists that provide additional insight into the lives of those they profiled over a period of several months.

Proceeds from each purchase of the e-book will support the efforts of the National Freedom of Information Coalition in protecting the right to an open government and advocating for accessibility and transparency, especially at the state and local levels.

Critics: Nonprofits could conceal government corruption

The formation of hundreds of nonprofit groups that run or support police, ambulance or fire services across Iowa has invoked deep questions about lack of oversight that some say could leave the state vulnerable to corruption.

The concern hinges on accountability: Their nonprofit status could shelter such groups from state audits, allow for secret meetings and prohibit the public's ability to inspect detailed spending information, according to a review by The Des Moines Register of such groups' status.

FOI Oklahoma accepting nominations for annual First Amendment awards ceremony

FOI Oklahoma is accepting nominations for its eighth-annual awards ceremony that recognizes organizations and individuals who promoted the First Amendment and freedom of information in 2014.

The ceremony will be March 14 at the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library, 300 Park Ave. Sunshine Week activities begin the following day.
