ust before Christmas, they're trying to rush through the Legislature two bills that will close the door on open government.

The first bill allows Governor Christie to make money off a book deal while still in office. The other eliminates posting of legal notices in newspapers and instead require it only online. Both were rushed out of Senate and Assembly Committees.

More than 4,000 people gathered in Paris from 7-9th December for the Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit 2016 hosted by the Government of France. OGP is a unique partnership dedicated to making government decision making more open, inclusive and responsive. Summit attendees included representatives from 80 governments, many of them heads of state and senior ministers; leaders from cities, municipalities and regions; and leading civil society organizations from around the world.

Brookings Institution publishes working paper on the impact of open government

Vanessa Williamson and Norman Eisen, both fellows at the Brookings Institution, co-authored a working paper that "reviews the empirical and theoretical literature examining the international impact of open government, and offers recommendations for policymakers and an agenda for further research on the subject."

Massachusetts: New website will detail state payroll, spending data

Massachusetts’ notoriously opaque state government is about to get more transparent, with the launch of a website detailing state payroll and spending data.

Comptroller Thomas G. Shack III says his office’s site, dubbed “CTHRU” and set to go live Sept. 14, will give the news media, public interest groups, and others an important tool to uncover waste and fraud.

Political Transparency: Strong Disclosure Laws Help Keep Elected Officials Accountable

The past year has seen no shortage of political scandals involving state officials. Alabama House Speaker Mike Hubbard was convicted on 12 felony counts connected to using his office for personal gain. New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and former Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos were convicted on corruption charges. Five Pennsylvania state representatives were convicted on bribery, corruption, extortion and conflict-of-interest charges. And Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox pleaded guilty to wire fraud, bribery and filing a false tax return.
