Official proclamation recognizing Mal Leary for his many contributions to NFOIC

The NFOIC Board of Directors

Sept. 28, 2021

WHEREAS, Mal Leary supported freedom of information ideals and principles in his decades of working as a professional journalist in Maine; and

WHEREAS, Mal for years advocated for open government in his capacities with the Maine Freedom of Information Coalition and as the Society of Professional Journalists Sunshine Chair in Maine; and

WHEREAS, Mal served on the National Freedom of Information Coalition’s Board of Directors, including many years as Board President; and

WHEREAS, Mal, as NFOIC President, guided the organization through a time of transition; and

WHEREAS, Mal, in the interest of sustaining the NFOIC, was instrumental in relocating the organization to the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications and in aligning the organization with the Brechner Center for Freedom of Information; and

WHEREAS, Mal, over decades, earned and maintained the trust and respect of colleagues, sources and the general public, and furthered the cause of government transparency;   

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, the National Freedom of Information Coalition Board of Directors hereby expresses its most sincere gratitude to Mal Leary for his decades of commitment, service and leadership to the National Freedom of Information Coalition.
