A Refresher Course in the Finer Points of FOIA

Sometimes, government needs to be reminded just who’s boss and just what rights and privileges the boss has. That is exactly what Virginia’s Freedom of Information Act, when utilized by an involved citizenry and understood by a willing government, accomplishes.

Earlier this year, when the board of directors of the Greater Lynchburg Transit Co. was in the throes of much internal bickering and squabbling, one board member filed suit, complaining the board chairwoman was violating the state’s FOIA regulations. Information, he claimed was not being provided to the public in a timely manner and the board was conducting too much of its business behind closed doors.
