From Wausau Daily Herald:
Sunday will mark the beginning of Sunshine Week, the week we set aside to promote the importance of open government and public access to government’s workings.
Daily Herald Media and Gannett Wisconsin Media recently have uncovered some major stories as a direct result of open records requests. We’re proud of the work we do to inform people about the workings of government.
But readers may not be aware of the central role open records and open meetings law plays in the day-to-day work of informing the public. It’s not the exception; it’s the rule: The information that’s required by law to be posted in advance on an agenda not only allows the news media to report on what is going to happen, it also means individuals can attend a meeting on a subject they care about.
