Editorial: In Minnesota, transparency key to government

As Fergus Falls City Council candidates sat in the Kennedy Secondary Auditorium Tuesday, a question on transparency was posed in one of the two debates.

Several of the responses stated that council members believed that the city was doing their best to be transparent to their constituents. Whether this was by publishing the council minutes online, having broadcasts of the meeting on PEG Access or reports through this newspaper.

But the reality and perception do not match up. Looking at responses from those on Facebook, social media and in emails we have received, community members believe that not everything is being displayed in the open. Some believe there are “secret meetings” that the rest of the public is not privy to.
