EDITORIAL: Judge’s ruling to open cell records goes beyond UNC

The university-related calls former UNC football coach Butch Davis made on his private cell phone will be made public after all. A new court ruling sends a message to any public official who thinks private phones – and we would add private email accounts — are the tools of government secrecy.
 
The recent spotlight on UNC athletics might seem like a big story about big money and big-time college sports, far removed from local public officials and local governments right here in Gaston County. The message in this case, however, transcends size. When it comes to secrecy, government size does not matter.
