Complaint logged against closed-door meetings regarding relocation of the James Brown Arena

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — A complaint has been lodged against Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority and Attorney J. Edward Enoch for a closed-door meeting regarding the relocation of the James Brown Arena as a violation of the Georgia Open Meetings Act.

But what is the Georgia Open Meetings Act?

According to Georgia law, all meetings (except otherwise provided by law) should be open to the public and all votes at any meeting should be made public.

The act further states the following:

“Any resolution, rule, regulation, ordinance, or other official action of an agency adopted, taken, or made at a meeting which is not open to the public as required by this chapter shall not be binding.”

Georgia law allows people to contest a resolution, rule, regulation, ordinance or formal action made in a closed-door meeting that violates this act within 90 days of the action taken or within 90 days the complainant knew or should have known about the alleged violation. The issue can not be taken up and contested after six months. Read more…
