The National Freedom of Information Coalition protects the public's right to oversee its government.

NFOIC is an alliance of freestanding, nonprofit, state FOI and First Amendment organizations and academic centers concentrating on First Amendment-related issues.

NFOIC annually offers some $220,000 in grants to help foster the creation and growth of state FOI coalitions to protect the public's right to an open government, and to assist with projects furthering public access to government records and meetings.

Our member coalitions fight government secrecy at the state and local level all over the country.

See the membership categories here and a list of member coalitions here.

NFOIC's goals are to:

  • start up and support citizen-driven state FOI and First Amendment organizations.
  • Foster the exchange of information through networking and the annual conference.
  • provide a collective voice for state FOI groups at the national level.
  • assist fundraising efforts of state organizations, and
  • explore critical issues and make recommendations for individual state actions or collective national action, and prepare educational reports or other publications.

National or regional FOI organizations, FOI committees of both state or national journalistic societies, and nonprofit state, regional or national organizations with an expressed concern for open government and freedom of information are invited to become associated with the coalition in an advisory and coordinating capacity.

Attorneys specializing in First Amendment issues and individual citizens with a concern about First Amendment issues are also invited to become associate members.
