Open government groups pen open letter to Senators Leahy and Specter

More than twenty organizations wrote to Congress to oppose a proposed amendment which would unnecessarily expand existing espionage statutes to criminalize the disclosure to the public of any classified information "concerning efforts by the United States to identify, investigate, or prevent terrorist activity."

The proposal is to be offered by Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) as an amendment to an unrelated bill on data mining that will be marked up by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, March 1.
